I really enjoy his writing, although I am not a professional web designer, web design is my favorite distraction.

I read a book many years ago, okay maybe four, by Eric Meyer called Eric Meyer on CSS. The book transformed both the way I viewed the internet and the way I made web sites. Maybe that is giving Eric Meyer too much credit, it is a book about CSS afterall, but I finally saw the importance of web standards, the importance of separating style from content, and I finally started designing web pages that didn't suck.

Now even though all of my sites are powered by Blogger, it is the CSS that makes them unique. This is handy for the color challenged to pick colors for their website. Here is the short list of web design tools I like or have recently found.

Browsershots.org

Color Blender

Color Schemer

Fetch

Gimp

Kuler

RoundedCornr

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621509807681743171.post-5148042889265423022008-03-04T18:58:00.000-08:002008-03-13T07:19:30.571-07:00Damn this template!Arghhh! So my frustration with the template right now is the damn Blogger Font and Color tool. Changing the styles in the the Edit HTML section seems easy, but Blogger Elements such as Search and Blog List include their own css styles referencing the stylesheet.

This would be fine except they reference the same textColor style but I want them to have different colors. No worries, just change the style reference in the respective widgets, but alas, I want the template to work without people having to modify every little detail in each widget they may or may not want.

Solution, I can override the style by adding specific css in the style sheet section and adding the !important declaration to it. So for the Blog List element the css should look like this:

/* Apply custom colors for Blog List found in widget. */

.blog-list-container a:link {
color: $linkColor !important;
}

.blog-list-container .item-title {
color: $Hcolor1 !important;
}

.blog-list-container .item-snippet {
color: $bottomtextcolor !important;
}

.blog-list-container .item-time {
color: $Hcolor3 !important;
}

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621509807681743171.post-89351074522311680862008-02-27T19:59:00.000-08:002008-02-27T20:01:40.946-08:00Amazing Hockey GoalThere are some great hockey goals, but none by a nine year old more amazing than this one.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621509807681743171.post-32651895113600819452008-02-23T21:36:00.000-08:002008-02-23T21:42:16.947-08:00GrandCentralGoogle recently acquired GrandCentral and has been kind enough to invite me to sign up for a free membership.
With GrandCentral, a free service from Google, you can receive phone calls and post voicemails right on your blog. Maybe I'll look back with regret someday, but I can't be bothered with this new internet phone call and messaging delight. GrandCentral is free today but what about tomorrow when I can't live without it? Egads, will I be charged for Blogger next?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621509807681743171.post-39702225296464455782008-02-21T20:39:00.000-08:002008-02-21T20:52:58.483-08:00Free For NowAs I continue to investigate Web 2.0 companies, I am realizing that the goal of many of the sites are to turn a profit. Imagine that. I just hate to invest the time and effort of learning a new site to lose free access to it in a year. I think Splashup is a great example of where the web is heading.
Splashup, formerly Fauxto, is a powerful editing tool and photo manager. With all the features professionals use and novices want, it's easy to use, works in real-time and allows you to edit many images at once. Splashup runs in all browsers, integrates seamlessly with top photosharing sites, and even has its own file format so you can save your work in progress.
Soon, most desktop applications will be web based, file storage will be web based, and my hope is that many will remain relatively free. I say relatively free because sites like Blogger and Adrive depend on either users including ads that generate revenue for both the user and the host (see top right Ads by Google), or display the ads while you benefit from their free service.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621509807681743171.post-36859408082081219052008-02-18T21:31:00.000-08:002008-02-20T21:24:34.982-08:00Japanese Cherry Blossom Blogger TemplateNot quite true to the original Wordpress theme, my Blogger template for this site is now available for download. Add hidden text here to the last two and all future posts.
1.b. Optionally, add to post template under Settings:Formatting:Post Template
2. Under Layout, edit Blog Posts to only display only 2 posts on main page.
3. Under Layout, edit Search This Blog and delete element title Search This Blog.
4. Under Layout, fix the feed urls and website addresses, or just delete the elements you do not want and add your own.
5. Under Layout, fix the Adsense element to 468 x 15 Horizontal Row, and adjust the colors to match the site. Or just delete it.
6. Create your own Title image, upload it to flickr, picasa, or wherever, and replace the background: #ffffff url(http://yourimageurlhere.jpg) no-repeat top left; with the new image location.

#outer-wrapper {
margin:0 auto;
padding:10px;
text-align:$startSide;
font: $bodyfont;
background: #ffffff url("http://lh6.google.com/whitney.steve/R6zd9cs82SI/AAAAAAAAAgA/aRvDFDJdAc8/s800/flowers_blue.jpg") no-repeat top left;
}

That's it. Not too painful.

The Japanese Cherry Blossom Theme for Wordpress still has some nice features that the Blogger Template I made never will. I have added some elements already, and will deviate further from the original minimalist theme in the future. Plus, the inherent differences between Blogger and Wordpress guarantee that I will never get this template any closer to the Japanese Cherry Blossom Theme.

The original Japanese Cherry Blossom theme was created by April D. Spreeman. Her site is not currently functioning so I can only link back to the Wordpress template site where I originally found her work.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621509807681743171.post-12169083883109499262008-02-16T21:33:00.000-08:002008-02-16T21:39:34.613-08:00RedundancyHere are the facts. Jeremy Wright details a time management theory centered around figuring out the rocks for your day first so you have time for everything. Pickles, rocks, anchovies (wait, there were not anchovies), what is this all about. Click that Pickle Jar link and find out.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621509807681743171.post-77067658430990762902008-02-12T16:15:00.000-08:002008-02-12T16:30:20.474-08:00Web 2.0 Websites, A Sea of UselessnessI was really excited when I started looking into all of the Web 2.0 websites. My excitement continued when I found this site highlighting the Top 100 Web 2.0 betas. I joyfully looked at the first ten, and then it happened. My excitement waned. It's sad, I'm over Web 2.0. I'm over the interactivity. I'm over the gimmicks. I'm over the special invite Beta. I'm over it because for ever useful Web 2.0 site, there are 100 wastes of time. Now, the wastes of time are different per individual, and each site fits its own niche, but yet a complete sea of uselessness to each individual. Yuck.

That said, as a web designer, I found two useful sites in the current Top 100. RoundedCornr, which oddly enough generates code for rounded corners, and a website that I can't remember the name of and couldn't find quickly in the Top 100. I'll probably have to go back through them all or god forbid, google it.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621509807681743171.post-25297634632421943892008-02-10T16:14:00.000-08:002008-02-10T18:10:31.399-08:00Creating a Tag Cloud from Blogger LabelsI found this easy tutorial for turning a blogger labels list into a tag cloud at Frivolous Motion. Jeffery Zeldmen apparently despises tag clouds, but I feel that if they are aphabetical and the purpose is clear then they are an OK way to display labels, if albeit completely overused and often obnoxious.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621509807681743171.post-63385695978351451882008-02-08T15:28:00.000-08:002008-02-08T16:08:05.689-08:00HuluI like that hulu lets you embed content into your blog, but because it has a lifespan if I include the video it is irrelevant after a week. But here is another irrelevant hulu post. My wife and I have started watching Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles. What a complete waste of time, but watching the young actress pretend to be a robot is priceless.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
